UpScrolled does not and will never shadowban content. The very idea of UpScrolled was born from the frustration with shadowbanning and quiet censorship on mainstream platforms.
We believe users deserve transparency — not silence. If content violates our community guidelines, you’ll know. If we have to shut down your account, we’ll be transparent about why. But your voice will never be suppressed in the shadows.

UpScrolled will never share your data with third parties for marketing, profiling, or commercial gain. We only disclose user data as required by Australian law — such as in response to a valid court order or lawful request — and always in accordance with our privacy policy.

Currently, UpScrolled’s core servers are hosted in Dublin, Ireland — chosen for its robust digital infrastructure, strong connectivity to both Europe and the U.S., and its reputation for strict data protection and privacy standards. It’s a location that reflects our commitment to performance, reliability, and user rights.
For speed and availability worldwide, we also make use of global CDNs and edge locations to ensure content loads quickly wherever our users are.
We do rely on some large-scale cloud providers at this stage — not because it’s our ideal, but because building fully independent infrastructure takes time. We’d rather be transparent about that than claim otherwise. Over time, we plan to reduce reliance on these providers and move toward greater independence.
We closely monitor the evolving regulatory environment, and will act quickly if changes require us to adjust where or how data is hosted.

Users create and share freely — whether it’s news, opinions, photos, or videos on any topic. We don’t produce the content or shape the narrative. Our role is to provide a fair, open space where everyone can speak, share, and connect — responsibly.
UpScrolled is headquartered in Australia. We chose it for its stability, rule of law, and strong democratic institutions. These foundations support independence, fairness, and the right to speak freely without undue interference.
We also recognize that laws and environments change. If it ever became necessary to protect our community’s rights, we would not hesitate to relocate operations to a jurisdiction better aligned with our values.

UpScrolled isn’t decentralized (yet) because today’s open protocols (e.g., ActivityPub, AT Protocol) don’t reliably deliver what we need for a mainstream, video-forward app: fast global discovery, stable search/ranking, and smooth media. In practice, these stacks still lean on centralized indexing to work well, so we’re shipping the experience that works now—not a theory.
We keep things open and simple with lightweight, common-sense protections—spam/bot filtering, straightforward reporting, and consistent deletes when people remove their own content. We’re building interoperable by design (clean exports, stable APIs) and will add optional bridges to open protocols as they mature, so you can reach more people without sacrificing speed or simplicity.
We protect open expression while acting against coordinated manipulation and evidence-based harm. That means we target behaviours like bots, fake accounts, impersonation, deceptive deepfakes, election interference, and organised propaganda—regardless of viewpoint. We remove only for specific, published rule violations or legal obligations. Pseudonyms are fine; inauthentic behaviour isn’t.
On our roadmap: Community Context (similar to community notes), enabling crowd-sourced, cited context to appear alongside disputed posts.

We want UpScrolled to survive without turning into something we don’t believe in. So yes, we may run ads. But they’ll be designed and managed by us. No Google Ads. No third-party tracking. No targeting based on personal data.

Our funding stance
We accept capital only from partners whose conduct and portfolios align with our principles: respect for human rights, lawful and responsible business practices, and no involvement in activities that cause or enable harm to people or communities anywhere. Funding comes with no editorial influence over content, data control, or product decisions.
In the future, we may consider venture capital—but only from firms that meet these standards and agree to governance terms that protect user rights and platform independence.
Yes. We use encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest on our servers. Sensitive credentials (like passwords) are protected with modern, industry-standard hashing.
Content that’s meant to be shared publicly—posts, comments, profiles—is not end-to-end encrypted, because it’s designed to be visible. It is still encrypted in transit and at rest while stored and delivered.
Private messages are encrypted in transit and at rest today, but not yet end-to-end encrypted; as part of our roadmap, we plan to introduce optional end-to-end encryption for one-to-one messaging, giving users clear choices around key backup, account recovery, and user-controlled reporting, with full technical details to be published before launch.
